From Travel Strollers to Books on Tape: What You Need to Travel with Kids
Traveling with children has a bad reputation. In part, that reputation is deserved. Many a long-suffering parent has sat through flights with a crying baby or listened to the chorus of "are we there yet, I have to go potty" coming from the backseat. Fortunately for you, this isn't the default option. With a little advance planning, you can make traveling with children into a much easier and stress-free activity. The bottom line is this: come prepared for anything and everything and always have new toys. Once upon at time, taking your stroller with you wasn't really a good option. Strollers were bulky and unwieldy, but today's parents don't have this excuse. Travel strollers today are lightweight and easily compacted. Many will even fit into an overhead bin. If your children are stroller-age, trust us, you'll miss having one if you plan to do any traveling. Carrying your children all day long is hardly a good substitute, especially when you can find models that also function as car-seats. Your child's safety should not be compromised just because you're on vacation! When it comes to traveling with kids, new toys can be such a blessing. Imagine: you're on the highway, making good time and your children are getting fussy in the backseat. The stuffed animals they were playing with have been tossed to the floor and they are beginning to bicker. You reach into your purse, pluck out two new toys that they've never seen before and hand them back. The next thing you know, you have blissful silence in the front seat and happy children in the back. This works on trains, planes, buses...just about anywhere you go. Pick up books that the kids haven't read or rent some books on tape- whatever you do, make sure that it is something new to them- the novelty of a new toy will outlast even a favorite toy of the past. Involve your kids in the process- within reason of course. By asking kids questions about what kind of vacation they want to take you can gauge their interest in various activities. Of course, the point isn't to cater to the kids, but to make sure that your vacation plans include a little bit of everyone's desires. Explain to your kids what is going to happen. For example, a child who understands what airport security is and how it works is going to deal with the process much more calmly than one who doesn't know what is happening. From there, a final piece of advice is this: make sure that everybody gets a little down time. As tempting as it is to "pack it all in" when on vacation, it's also important to actually get some rest time in there as well.
