Three New Resource Books From ABC-CLIO Will Help Students Explore 2009 National History Day Theme

Santa Barbara, Calif., & College Park, Md. (PRWEB) May 28, 2008 -- Can one individual really change the course of history? Students can answer that question by exploring the ways the actions of individuals have shaped the world in which we live today and then by developing their 2009 National History Day projects with three new teacher resource books from ABC-CLIO (http://www.abc-clio.com). The books focus on the 2009 National History Day theme of "The Individual in History," by exploring the impact of key individuals in three different social movements in U.S. history.

History teachers can use the books' lesson plans to help students explore the scholar-authored essays and primary source materials that are included for each topic.

The National History Day (http://www.nhd.org) contest engages students in grades six through 12 in discovery and interpretation of historical topics related to an annual theme. Students hone their talents and produce creative and scholarly projects in the form of exhibits, documentaries, historical papers, performances or Web sites. After a series of district and state contests, the program culminates with a national competition at the University of Maryland in College Park each June. The book takes a close look at the actions of two individuals who changed history, Sam Adams and Carrie Nation.

Teachers can use the standards-based activities and primary sources in "The Individual in History: Environmental Movement (http://www.abc-clio.com/products/overview.aspx?productid=110511) " to stimulate classroom discussions on the hot topic of the environment. The materials will help students consider how pioneering environmentalists such as John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt and Rachel Carson changed the world in which we live today.

Using "The Individual in History: Native American Resistance (http://www.abc-clio.com/products/overview.aspx?productid=110513) ," history teachers can give students an insider's perspective on the impact of the pioneers and American colonialism on Native Americans. Students will learn more about King Philip, who in 1675 waged war against English colonists in what is now southern New England; and the westward expansion in the early 1800s, particularly of Tecumseh and his brother, The Prophet, who attempted to unite all tribes in a fight against the pioneers.
